If your social media profile isn’t as impressive as it could be, it may actually be hurting your business. For this reason, it’s important to learn which elements typically contribute to a truly compelling social media profile.

As an entrepreneur, your social media profiles, such as your Facebook business page and Twitter profile, are virtual calling cards which tell prospective customers a lot about your company. If you don’t send the right message with these social media profiles, people may decide that your business isn’t worth the trouble.

To help you avoid mistakes – and to help you create social media profiles which really shine – we’ve created a helpful quick guide…

Consider Usernames Carefully – Some social media platforms will allow you to use your company name as a user name – Facebook is one example. This is very useful as it will help others to find you via internal search engines at social media platforms. However, certain interfaces, such as Twitter, may require you to think up a username, as characters for a username will be limited. In addition, since so many people use Twitter, you may find that someone else has already taken your business name as a “handle”.

If you do need to come up with a username, put some thought into it. Some entrepreneurs use abbreviated versions of their business names as Twitter usernames (or choose usernames which feature relevant keywords). For example, if your company sells car accessories, using the keywords, “car toys” in your social media “handle” will help people who are interested in what you sell to find you.

Your username should be never be politically incorrect, unless you’re running a business with an alternative clientele. You surely already have a sense of who you’re selling to. Everything that you do online should be geared towards pleasing your “ideal customers”.

As we mentioned, most platforms will allow you to use your business name and we do recommend this…

So, avoid usernames which don’t reference your business name or reference what you sell or provide.

Select the Right Profile Picture – The profile picture that you select will also have a bearing on the impression that you make. In most cases, it’s wise to choose a corporate logo. This is the quickest and easiest way to achieve a professional and polished look and you may use it for all of your social media profiles.

If you’re not using a corporate logo, take a moment to think about the current photograph that you’ve selected as your profile pic. Does it really send a message of success? Some people post photos of a product or photos of themselves, since they are CEOs. While these approaches are “ok”, they won’t send the same strong and positive message as pictures of logos. The best in the business typically use logos and you should probably do so, too.

One idea is to freshen up your logo so that it’s more modern and appealing and then “launch” the new logo by adding it as the profile picture on all of your social media accounts.

Write a Concise and Interesting Company Bio – Your bio will be posted in the “About” section of your Facebook business profile page and there may also be room for it at other social media platforms. While all that you’ll need is a paragraph, it should be carefully written in order to highlight the strengths of your company.

Ideally, your bio will be a type of mission statement which also lets readers know what your company does. So, you should mention the goods and services that you offer and then explain how your company approaches the task of doing business. For example, you may wish to spotlight eco-friendly business practices, ethical customer service policies and any charitable initiatives.

Once you have your bio, it will be something that you can cut and paste wherever there is room for it…

If your profile falls short in terms of this trio of important elements, it may be time to make some changes. Otherwise, your subpar social media profiles may hurt your business…
